Below is a list of the hooks we were presented in the chapter All the World's a Stage Burgess tells us "actively engaging students before the class period even starts makes for an interesting period." (p 110) He goes on to say "My goal is to make the message something that has kids talking and buzzing even before the bell rings.." (p110)

I've seen many teachers use images for props when using PowerPoint or Smart Notebook lessons. Burgess gives us confirmation that using high interest pictures will increase student engagement.
I know it is not the quantity of hooks that are used, but using just the right hook at the right time and lesson can have a profound affect on student learning and at the same time allowing student excitement and motivation about learning to sky rocket. The six Stand and Deliver hooks are honed in to bring out that inner presenter in you and draw students in.
THE STORYTELLING HOOK
THE SWIMMING WITH THE SHARKS HOOK
THE TABOO HOOK
THE MIME HOOK
THE TEASER HOOK
THE BACKWARDS HOOK
Advanced tactics are just that- tools to enhance what we are teaching but not replacing the interaction between students and teacher. Burgess brings up a great point with the use of technology. As educators, we should definitely be exposing our students to the amazing technology that is available and incorporating that technology into our practice, but not allow that technology to facilitate as the teacher. It is that interaction between teacher and students that is the "magic." It's this interaction that helps create those Aha! moments for students.
"Use technology as a teaching tool. Harness your students' knowledge of and familiarity with this tool to help them succeed" Burgess p 128 I love his "Power of Live" p129-132! It is very thought provoking when we are continually hearing of technology integration in schools. Just remember this:
"Nothing is more powerful than a master teacher standing before a class of students orchestrating the learning experience. " Burgess p 131
